Sell me on it......

Just a fun little activity.

Let's say I'm a father in a family 4 living 150 miles from the Point. The fair comes to town each summer, along with fairs and festivals in neighboring communities. I've got 2 children ages 12 and 10. Gas prices are horrible....Sell me on why I should come experience the Point instead of just hanging around the local carnivals.

Fairs have one thing CP doesn't have. Carnies. They are an attraction in their own right. Nothing more nice to see then a person running a ride with a crimped hand and rotten teeth.

Have you looked at many cedar point employees? I can think of more than a dozen with teeth that'll rival even the most disgusting carnie.

It depends on how tall your children are. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that you need to be 52 inches to safely ride all of the coasters. If your children are that tall, I would definately take them to Cedar Point.

Cedar Point has nothing on carnivals. The little rinka a dink coasters they have at carnivals is nothing compared to riding Millenium, Magnum, Raptor, etc.

Now if your children are not tall enough to ride these coasters, I would suggest just taking them to the fair. Because while CP is great and all, I know if I was 10 years old and was told I couldn't ride all of the coasters I might be upset.

Also the fair might even have a bigger selection of carnival rides than CP. And you wouldn't be paying an arm an a leg for them.

The last time I went to a carnival was the worst experience I've ever had at one an probally my last. I was ripped off when buying my wristband, First off the wristband was $22 and I gave the person $25 expecting them to hand me my $3 change, with me being kinda out of that day I thought I had gotten the change from the carnie person. Later that day I checked my wallet and I didn't have the $3. It's my fault for not asking for my change but the thing is that they didn't even offer it to me. I could have used that to buy a nice pop or water out of the vending machines at Cedar Point. Ohh well.

Back on topic I'd go to Cedar Point than go to the carnival. First off the ride operators don't smoke. Second the rides are way better. Third I haven't yet been ripped off at CP. I could go on and on but you kinda get the point.

Add: Over the ticket booth at the carnie it had the writing in small print that read "Please ask for your change" and when I say small I mean like size 48 on the computer small.

You must be 54 inches tall to ride the Raptor and the Mantis. Excluding those two coasters and the Witches Wheel, the height restriction is 52 inches or less for everything else. If anyone cares, a complete list of height restrictions is on the park map.

The safety of cedar point or any fixed amusement park is number one

on their list to insure that all guest have fun in a safe way. Do you really

think that a carnival worker is going to care that a ride is put together

safely. If there was a broken bolt, the carnival would use it anyway.

Or find a q-tip. I have seen numerous television shows on this

subject. The sight of someone covered in tatoo's and smoking

while operating a ride isn't amusing. Do carnival operator's

even check ride restrainsts?

Force00, how do you get riped off? I have heard of people getting ripped off, but never riped off. I'm just kiddin with ya.

I agree that CP is much safer. The ride ops are probably a lot cleaner than carnies too. But if your kids can't ride coasters yet, and you don't have a bunch of extra cash lying around, I think a carnival would be the best bet.

Most carnivals have more flat rides than CP does too. I am not saying CP is bad for this, but they have coasters. Which carnivals don't, so they have more flats. So your kids could probably ride more at the carnival than at CP.

So if you don't have a lot of money, why drive 150 miles away to pay outrageous food prices and 30+ for ticket prices, when you can pay and drive less for your local carnival.

But like I said before, if your kids are of height requirement that is a totally different story...

I've been reading this forum for just about 3 years now and have yet to register or post, but for some reason, I'm compelled to here. That being said, the reasons to go to Cedar Point over a carnival are endless, but I'll just give my favorites:

Your children may not be able to ride everything but there is plenty to keep you busy. Aside from the big coasters, there are the smaller coasters, flat rides, shows, games, soak city, etc to keep you going.

There may not be as many flat rides but if you google "carnival accident" and compare that to the safety record of amusement parks, CP specifically, that should be enough right there.

In comparison to other parks I've been to (except disney/universal), CP is the cleanest, most family friendly.

I live 15 minutes from Valleyfair! in Minnesota and 6 hours from SFGA in Chicago and I still make the 11 hour journey to CP at least twice a year. Sure, CP has its weak points but it draws no comparison from a carnival that arrives on a semi trailer. Just my 2 cents.

It sounds like to me your question is money related and not compairing rides (no comparison anyway). Well....it will only cost you $60 in gas (300 miles / 20 mpg x $4 per gallon). Thats not that much when you consider the overall cost of the trip. Plus you could take a picnic lunch at eat at your car and save some money. Your overall trip to the Point would not be that much if you really take a look at it. Plus, look at everything you will get for your money.

Its up to you as what you consider value for your money. To me, a trip to Cedar Point would beat the hell out of any trip to a local fair.

For me, it is more of a money issue. And if you have little kids, sure CP might be funner than a carnival. But being 10-12 years old, if you are too short to go on coasters...you are old enough to know what they are. And you will probably want to go on them. So IMO it would suck for me to be 12 years old, at Cedar Point, and told that I can't go any of the coasters. I would feel like I am missing out on something, which I would be.

If I were at a carnival and I was 12 years old, I would most likely beable to ride everything. So I woudn't feel like I am missing out.

There was one year when I went to CP with my family. None of them would go on any of the coasters with me except for Iron Dragon and Disastor Transport. I was very sad to be surrounded by these amazing coasters, and not beable to ride any of them.

But that's just me.

I really haven't noticed CP employee's looking at all like a true carnie. Don't forget the nick names carnies have to, eg Rabbitt, Monkey key, spider are just a few I have heard. Ever see the Simpson's episode where a Carnie and his son duked Homer out of his House? Priceless. Carnies are world class grifters. Another trait you can only find at fairs. Maybe things have changed. I haven't been to a carnival in years. I just don't find them very fun. Was just having a little fun. Hope I didn't offend anyone.

We don't go to carnivals,safety reason. If I were to take my 9yr old daughter to a carnival insted of CP she would be pissed.She is 52 inches and can ride all but a couple of the coasters.I had a bad time on a bullet ride at a carnival when I was dating my wife and have not been to one since.

Were they all produced by Michael Moore and Al Gore? Do you think the owners of a carnival can afford to have their operation shut down because of safety violations? I would wager to say that they would be hurt more than Cedar Point due to an accident.
