Company announces hiring of The Kempton Group to market and sell partnerships for its parks.

Cedar Fair Entertainment Company Press Release

SANDUSKY, Ohio, July 21 -- Cedar Fair Entertainment Company (NYSE: FUN), a leader in regional amusement parks, water parks and active entertainment, today announced its hiring of The Kempton Group (TKG) to market and sell partnerships for its 18 North American parks.

"Partnership Marketing is a growth segment for our business," said Jack Falfas, Chief Operating Officer. "We reach more than 22 million consumers who represent an attractive market to many brands around the world. In tandem with TKG, we will build ideas and programs that will deliver value to many business segments."

The growing "out-of-home," alternative media channels that Cedar Fair parks offer will allow consumer brands and service companies to get face to face with a diverse audience driven by young people ages 12-24 and families 25-49. Cedar Point, its flagship property in Sandusky, Ohio, has been named the best amusement park in the world for the last ten years. Knott’s Berry Farm, America’s first theme park, has been a staple in the Los Angeles area since 1928.

"We have admired Cedar Fair’s parks for some time," said Tom Kempton, President of TKG. "They are leaders in the amusement park industry. We believe it is a logical fit for TKG in that we have a substantial background in developing partnerships and media packages for theme parks, sports properties, lodging and leisure time attractions."

Kempton said that programs will range from fully integrated national partnerships to regional and property specific relationships. "A-la-carte" in-park signage and internet advertising packages will be available to companies as well. In 2007, Cedar Fair entertained more than 22 million guests and received 51 million unique visitors to its websites.

"These are huge numbers that jump off the page," said Kempton. "Cedar Fair offers marketers the valuable opportunity to cut through the clutter, engage park guests through communication and experience, and do so in an exclusive, competition-free environment."

TKG, a Cincinnati based marketing firm formed in 1986, specializes in strategic alliances, partnership marketing and event sponsorship.

Cedar Fair is a publicly traded partnership headquartered in Sandusky, Ohio, and one of the largest regional amusement-resort operators in the world. The company owns and operates 11 amusement parks, six outdoor water parks, one indoor water park and five hotels. Amusement parks in the company’s northern region include two in Ohio: Cedar Point, consistently voted "Best Amusement Park in the World" in Amusement Today polls, and Kings Island; as well as Canada’s Wonderland, near Toronto; Dorney Park, PA; Valleyfair, MN; and Michigan’s Adventure, MI. In the southern region are Kings Dominion, VA; Carowinds, NC; and Worlds of Fun, MO. Western parks in California include: Knott’s Berry Farm; Great America; and Gilroy Gardens, which is managed under contract.

Re: Cedar Fair launches corporate partnership program

This is one from the Six Flags playbook. I just hope it doesn't mean those time share assholes will be on every other midway corner.

Re: Cedar Fair launches corporate partnership program

I would also hate to see Cedar Point littered with "A-la-carte in-park signage", to remind you of all the crap you left back home that you wanted to escape from in the park.

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and talks like a duck, its probably a duck. (And I'm pretty sure you can figure out what to substitute for "duck").

Re: Cedar Fair launches corporate partnership program

As Jeff said the first thing I thought of when I read this was Six Flags. Unfortunately all this in park advertising really does cheapen the in-park experience so I hope they keep it minimal... My instincts tell me they won't though.

Re: Cedar Fair launches corporate partnership program

If this is any hint:

http://www.tkg-marketing.com/clients.htm

... the company out of Cincy lists Six Flags as a client. We all know what is coming.

In a few seasons, Richard and Jack will look back and see what a waste of money this really is.

Flower beds will need electric lines routed and cement poured for signs.
The Labor Dept. and Sign shop will spend more time hanging banners, flags and signs and other duties will be neglected.
When sponsorships end, buildings (and worse) ride units will need re-painted.

I guess it's finally time to put the "Skittles" logo on the Sky Ride and re-name it "Sky Skittles."

Are you kidding? Knowing Cedar Fair, I doubt they're paying the firm a dime. I'd be willing to bet they're working strictly on commission.

Re: Cedar Fair launches corporate partnership program

I hate the thought of so much advertising happening in the park on things like billboards and rides. It really is prime real estate for marketing, but it also shouldn't be happening at an amusement park beyond the level that it already happens. If its small things like the cybercafe in Donut Time being sponsored by AT&T, that's okay, but signs all around the park...if they clutter up pictures, I'll be one unhappy photographer.

Re: Cedar Fair launches corporate partnership program

You all make it sound like a horrible idea...when was the last time a bad decision was made? Oh, wait..

-Building a corporate office in the park

-Bringing in outside vendors and then charging twice the original amount of the out of park price

-Increasing food and parking prices

-Recent property purchases

-Almost every decision Kinzel makes

Re: Cedar Fair launches corporate partnership program

I think this is his worst decision of all. When I am at CP, I want to feel like I am getting away from everything else. Not be surrounded by non-CP advertisements. I hope it won't be as bad as we all think it will be.

Re: Cedar Fair launches corporate partnership program

This is the one thing I have feared for a long time. This is also why I love Cedar Point so much more than other parks like Six Flags who are corporate malls dressed up with a crappy experience. I love escaping to Cedar Point to get away from all this advertising that is shoved right in our face. Cedar Point was so unique in actually being so grand yet so much of an escape. Well, just another sign the end times are nearing, bring it on NWO! Bring it on! Maybe that was a bit much, but I had been hoping for years that these corporate spoilers wouldn't infest the last place on Earth that felt like heaven, and it turns out they have. Sorry if this is offensive, but I got to say it anyways. Screw You Mister Richard Lee Kinzel!

Oh well, I'm probably overreacting, but for some reason this seems to upset me in a way that maybe others can understand.

Last place that felt like heaven? Stay at a hotel on Poipu Beach and get back to me on that. You'll have a different opinion.

Re: Cedar Fair launches corporate partnership program

^ Ah yes, pardon my error. I was just exagerating my Point. CP really is a great place to get away from our "corporations in bed with government" atmosphere though. Oh well, we'll see how this goes. But I will say that Six Flags doesn't look so great these days...

Re: Cedar Fair launches corporate partnership program

Actually, when I was at SFoG in April, only twice was I truly cognizant of the ads... once in the bathroom, and once on a queue TV. I still am unhappy with this decision, but hopefully it won't be too disastrous.

I really don't think Mr. Kinzel woke up one day and said... "you know what would make CP really sparkle?... a pure inundation of advertisements!... yeah, thats the ticket." Rather, it seems thats the way of the world lately. Websites (including this one), movie theatres, zoos, amusement parks, baseball stadiums have all incorporated advertising to increase profit, or at least offset operating costs. Sure, it takes away some "charm", but I would prefer that to losing parks completely.**

** I realize that some may think there are other ways the park could cut back, or readjust the budget without bringing in 3rd party advertising, but since I'm not an accountant for the park, I will keep my statement as it is.

Re: Cedar Fair launches corporate partnership program

I just returned from a trip that included stops at Dorney Park and Six Flags Great Adventure. I really wasn't bothered at all by the ads at Six Flags. There was an advertisement to "reach 25 million customers" in a rather typical advertising location for male patrons. Whether I am looking at white ceramic tiles or print copy at that moment during the day, it really does not alter my day.

We took many pictures of the rides at Six Flags and, I never really noticed anything that distracted me to the point of being bothersome.

On another note, until this trip, I had always felt that Cedar Fair properties were better run than Six Flags properties. This time was different. Great Adventure was clean. The presence of security guards kept line-jumping to almost absolute zero -- something I cannot always say about Cedar Point. Kings Island is even worse in this regard.

Bottom line: This partnership will increase revenue at the parks. I would be more than happy to read an ad or two if it meant that Cedar Point was going to get an El Toro-type ride a couple years earlier.
