Cedar Point feeling the tough summer economy

Visitors try to cope with high cost of gas.

They are still screaming in anticipation at the point. The roller coasters at Cedar Point are always rated in the top 10 in the world.

You wouldn't know that by the look of the parking lot. On the first day of summer, there are hundreds of empty spots.

Re: Cedar Point feeling the tough summer economy

I think this story is a bit premature. We're still dealing with graduation parties and a few school districts are even just getting done, making up days off from winter. The real action is always July and August.

And duh, Millennium Force is not the new ride, and rides built since have added thousands of people per hour capacity to dilute the crowds.

Re: Cedar Point feeling the tough summer economy

The Millennium Force example was weak, they completely ignore the fact that they have added alot of new rides since then. Hmmm, maybe guests tend to spread out more as new rides are added. Let's see, Wicked Twister, Top Thrill Dragster, maXair, Skyhawk, Maverick, Planet Snoopy, Skyscraper, is it possible that they might be riding these newer attractions? No, of course not, what was I thinking.

Ugh, why is it that every Cleveland article has the same comments every time? I don't know about anyone else but I am soooo sick of hearing "No more Cedar Point for me, because Geauga Lake closed!" Actually I bet a lot of those comments came from the people over at GeaugaLakeToday.

I actually registered to that news article site to give them a piece of my mind.

The weekdays were definitely less crowded than they have been the last few years up until this week. The crowds have been picking up, but its still pretty obvious that the weekdays are less crowded than usual, and the weekends have been busier.

Re: Cedar Point feeling the tough summer economy

I went on Wednesday, and the park was jammed. It was pretty much freezing that day (we were wearing hoodies), so I'm guessing most of the people there were planning on going to Soak City and didn't.

We, however, did. We were 2 out of maybe 15 people there (I'm actually being generous), and we walked/took stairs on to absolutely every slide with no one in front of us.

Re: Cedar Point feeling the tough summer economy

Putit this way...I want to visit the point even more....with that beingsaid. To visit the point. I have to work even more.

Sooo3-4- days a week I have to work 8 hours+ a day. Than 2 days a week Ihave to go to school, and this is my summer schedule where I amsupposed to have a break....

My breaks are consumed by mathhomework and other local options when I cannot afford Cedar Point, meanwhile I visit Cedar Point whenever I save enough extra change.

Everything is going up in cost...the cost of Mountain Dew to Red Bull, along with everything else I need to live off from. Besides gas. Cedar Point needs more incentives for platinum pass holders. Hotel Discounts, gas cards, SOMETHING that takes away from the bottom line on season pass holders.

Visit 3 times get $25 off hotel room for one night or $25 in "Beagle bucks" or whatever the program is so we have "free money" to spend around the park

Re: Cedar Point feeling the tough summer economy

^ I disagree on them needing anymore incentives for SP holders. After 4 days in the park its free. they give a pretty good choice of discounts that help. If your having trouble affording the trip try the less expensive hotels around. The maples is great other than the trains, just turn on a radio and your fine.

I would like to see them turn the food situation around though...

Re: Cedar Point feeling the tough summer economy

Do I have to point out again that a shorter line doesn't mean that fewer people are riding? If a coaster can give 1,200 rides per hour, then it gives 1,200 rides per hour whether there are 100 people or 10,000 people in the queue.

The park is NOT a family park. Where are the major attractions that can be enjoyed by the whole family?

Instead of adding major attractions that the entire family can enjoy together, the park is adding used rides that were in terrible condition from what I have been told, and major coasters that can alienate families. For the 2007 season, they removed a family attraction and replaced it with an IntaRide coaster with a 52" height requirement. Would you call a place that does that a family park? Aside from the Snoopy themed ice show, can anyone here name ONE major new family attraction added to Cedar Point (not including Soak City) since 1999?

Plus, they charge full admission to people over 48" tall, even when there are several major attractions they can't ride.

While admission prices may be comparable to other properties or even cheaper, their food pricing is outrageous, and the service has been going down hill for years. As such, I would NOT consider a trip to Cedar Point to be a good value.

Maybe I am just spoiled because so far this year I have been to Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, and Holiday World (in addition to Waldameer and three Cedar Fair parks amusement parks). Walt Disney World and Holiday World both offer a great deal of value for the price. Plenty of attractions for children and parents alike, and pricing that doesn't make you have to mortgage your house in order to afford a hamburger, fries, and a drink.

Re: Cedar Point feeling the tough summer economy

Why should a 48" person get reduced admission? That guest can ride 66 of the 75 rides in the park. Seems like a pretty good deal to me! And while I would never argue that any park completes with Disney for family-friendly, I count at least 30 rides at Cedar Point that adults and children could ride together.

I've never been to Holiday World, but I don't see how this is a better lineup for families than what Cedar Point offers.

If there are only 100 people in line, it's more likely that there will be fewer trains on the track -- and maybe only one, depending on the ride. So in that situation, the (effective) capacity will most definitely drop.

Re: Cedar Point feeling the tough summer economy

That's not true, especially for Millennium Force. If they can run three trains, they'll run three trains. I mean, they did it for BooBuzz and had to leave water dummies on the train because there weren't enough of us to fill three. In this case, the reporter said the line was a half-hour. They were not running two trains.

What are you talking about, Sam? How many kids do you have? You "heard" the rides were in bad shape. Well gosh, everything you say must be true.

I can't think of any park that has as many kiddie rides outside of Disney. And what's hilarious is that you have "grown ups" saying they're all the same circular rides, and yet you can sit there and watch those smiling happy kids go from one to the next all day.

Re: Cedar Point feeling the tough summer economy

Many rides at CP can be enjoyed by the entire family. A typical non-coaster ride at CP says this: "At Least 46 inches tall or accompanied by a responsible person." That is practically encourging parents to ride with kids, because the kids can't ride alone. While dark rides are nice, and I wish CP had one, there are many rides at CP that are enjoyed by everyone. Even Millenium Force is a great family ride. Plus, how many parks have three car rides, three antique carrousels, a sky ride, a riverboat ride and a steam train ride all in one park?

To CPBoy77, who asks "why does every Cleveland article have the same comments?" Because the comments are from many of the people who post on a certain Geauga Lake fan site where the bitter come together to post their conspiracy theories.

Depends on the family. Mom, Dad and 3 teenagers might find SkyHawk, Maverick, etc very family friendly.

God knows when I was a teenager I found Disney boring, but I grew out of that

Re: Cedar Point feeling the tough summer economy

Cedar Point needs a new, big attraction the entire family (from 5 years old and up) can enjoy together. Not an ice show or a kiddie ride big enough for adults. They took out a log flume and replaced it with an intense coaster.

This new attraction should interest Grandma and Grandpa as well as the kiddies. And, there is no reason they can't do it. You can't tell me they couldn't take the Peanuts characters and make an interesting flume ride or dark ride the entire family could enjoy.

But...I'll say this: If you aren't going to maintain it over the years (ala Disaster Transport) don't do it.
