Direction question

Yesterday on my way home from the point I was driving on the 280 and noticed an exit for OH 2. I know that driving there/home I take the 75 -280 - Ohio Turnpike - OH 4 - OH 2. Would it be a good idea to take the OH 2 directly to the 280 avoiding the other highways? I'd imagine if it was the shortest route mapquest would suggest taking that way, but I'm just wondering if anyone has done that before and how much longer a trip it would be? It seems like the OH 2 follows along the lake so I thought it might be a nice drive.

Re: Direction question

I posted something similar to this and got these responses. http://www.pointbuzz.com/Forums/Thread/22711.aspx?page=1#358312

Hope that helps a little. We took 75 to 280 to the turnpike on the way there. But on the way back we just took the turnpike to 75, and it was much easier.

Re: Direction question

That didn't realy help me much... I was just wondering what the drive was like taking OH 2 directly to the 280 if anyone has done that before.

Thanks though.

Re: Direction question

Its a 2 lane, 55mph rural highway. You'll get a good view of the nuclear reactor, but that's about the only "scenic" thing you'll see going that way. The time and distance difference between Rte-2 and I80/90 is negligible, so its more of a preference.

Do you prefer a safe 6 lane freeway, or do you prefer a 2 lane highway where death could be hiding around each curve?

I like to live on the edge, so I take DEATH with my drive to CP....

Re: Direction question

Those freeway trolls do a better job of keeping that road smooth than any expressway I've ever seen in Michigan.

^Yes because your life is worth less then $4. Give me the faster speeds, multi lanes, and rest stops of the Turnpike baby!

Re: Direction question

These guys are pansys. Route 2 is fine. Maybe it's because I'm from Southwestern Ontario and we don't have fancy 6 lane freeways. It's a nice change from the Turnpike.

Re: Direction question

I'm a veteran of both type of roads, being an MTU alumnus, and I can (anecdotally) say that 2-lane highways are nice, but nothing beats the 6-laners for efficiency and safety.

Re: Direction question

^ - yeah, I've driven US-2 more than a handful of times. Its amazing how slow people always find their accelerators right when the passing lane starts.

Re: Direction question

Exactly. But once in a while, you find some rich idiot driving his BMW at 90+mph. Gives the term "drafting" a whole new meaning.

Re: Direction question

I wouldn't mind going by the nuclear reactor even just for the hell of it. I like the 80/90 route because there are no large pot holes for instance.

I've never seen a nuclear reactor up close so it would be kind of creepy.

Re: Direction question

There's not much to it. There's a giant "silo" with steam coming out of the top of it.

^^ - I've seen enough cops in really good hiding spaces to not try that.

Re: Direction question

The best hiding spot I ever saw a cop in was in Trego County Kansas. You can see for miles, yet, we didn't ever see the cop. Have no idea where he was hiding.

I don't know what people are so worried about on Route2. Just drive safely and pay attention and you should be fine for the most part.

I also got pretty creative on my way home last time. I ended up taking 163 to 51 to 795 to 280. Interesting route, I'm not sure how much time I saved/wasted. Didn't see many trucks, though.

Re: Direction question

I always take route 2. I really hate toll roads. It may be a slightly nicer drive but not enough for me to pay extra. Route 2 is a shorter trip distance wise so that saves gas.

Re: Direction question

^Add in a few stop light/signs and the fact you probably will not be able to use cruise and you eat up your advantage on using gas right there.

I use cruise pretty much the entire time. Other than the couple stoplights in Oregon I never have to stop until I get to Sandusky. Its not even 55 the whole way. About half of route 2 is a 4 lane 65 mph highway just like the rest of Ohio. I always pass about 50 tour busses on the way down on friday nights so I figure that route must be pretty decent.

Re: Direction question

And if you know how to bypass Oregon, you don't even have to worry about stop lights there.

Re: Direction question

lladnar is right. Once you get out of Oregon, OH and past Maumee Bay St. Park, it's non-stop two lane highway all the way to Pt. Clinton. Just took that route last weekend when visiting the parents in MI. The only bad thing about Rt 2 is if you get stuck behind a line of busses or 18-wheelers in the two-lane section.
