Cedar Point physics outing lauded

Physics students will take trip to Cedar Point trip despite trustee's concern.

Posted April 26, 2008, 5:03A by Walt

A Cedar Point field trip for physics students from Windsor's Holy Names High School will take place despite the reservations of a school board trustee.

"It is very difficult to show physics in a class," said Frank Mancina, a teacher at Holy Names high school. Bringing students to an amusement park will allow them to observe physics in everyday settings, he said.

Though the concerned trustee, Joan Courtney, voted in favor of the field trip, she has asked to see the work that is related to the trip once it has been completed by the students.

The school board looks at every field trip individually and evaluates the connection between the curriculum and the activities on the field trip, said Linda Staudt, superintendent of the Essex-Windsor Catholic District School Board. "In this case there is a connection," she said.

Re: Cedar Point physics outing lauded

Apparently Joan Courtney has never taken a physics class. I wish when I had been in school that I would have gotten a trip to Cedar Point for physics, it would have been a fun trip.

Joan Courtney apparently also isn't aware that Holy Name would hardly be the first math or physics class to visit Cedar Point. Yeah, no one will be thinking about science while *on* the rides, but generally after each ride the teacher will corral the students and discuss what they just observed. Not exactly unheard of. And on Math/Science Day, CP even does its part to post signs on stanchions with brief physics lessons and facts about some of the rides. And they'll probably learn as much and retain more knowledge from that experience than they would bored out of their skulls at some 'educational' museum.

Re: Cedar Point physics outing lauded

I cut it out from the paper yesterday and gave it to my physics teacher as a "subtle hint".

Yeah, amusement park field trips have been pretty much banned by our school board as well. (Greater Essex County District School Board, not the Catholic board in the article.) Most of them keep claiming that there won't be enough to do there for people scared of big rides.

a) *buzz* FAIL.

b) They're not obligated to go.

Unless it's integrated directly into the curriculum and your mark depends on the trip, I don't see what the real issue is.

(The border crossing is another beast entirely... Canada's Wonderland is 2 hours further away but more feasible these days.)

Haha thats my high school! I went on that trip in 06 and I didn't even take physics.

We'll miss you MrScott

Re: Cedar Point physics outing lauded

Yeah our band class takes a trip every year (well since last year). This year we our going on May 28th. We don't even have a reason to, but why not i guess.

Re: Cedar Point physics outing lauded

I was in Physics my senior year of high school, and we were supposed to have gone to CP...but we never made it up there due to budget problems. Sad.

I remember going in high school for my physics class. The teacher told us he didn't want to go on physics day because he didn't want to do physics while he was at an amusement park. Best/worst teacher ever.

Pretty sure had I gone for Physics, not much work would have been done.

We had sort of a "Science Day" at PKD way back when I was in 6th grade (May 1997.....wow). They had paper airplane contents, dropping an egg of a roof contests, generally fun stuff like that. I remember riding Shockwave, the Togo standup they have, and carrying an accelerometer (a very cheap version of one) to measure the g-forces on the ride. I think the bottom of the first drop was 3 or 3.5. It was fun, although that was the only real ride we got to go on since it was so crowded.

Just to make you feel better RaceRinger. I went on an 8th grade class trip way back in 1990 to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg. I think my school did it mostly for fun, but it was a trip headed by a history teacher and maybe she shared some hisorical facts about Europe through the day. I don't remember the hictorical facts but I had a great time on the rides.

At my school all the biology kids are skipping to go ride while the physics kids are doing worksheets.

^^Oh how I love my BGE. 1990 is a few years too far back for my time (I was only 6), but I'm sure the park was still great back then. Back when Big Bad Wolf and Nessie still ruled the park. And then they built and tore down my Drachen Fire. I still get choked up over that.

Man times have changed... Back in Jr. High we went to Cedar Point every year for our Safety Club (Basically for crosswalk guards). No reason, we just went. That was the only reason I ever was a crossing guard.
