New Cedar Fair building gets 10-year tax abatement

Sandusky City Commissioners vote to grant tax break for $3.25 million project.

Posted April 15, 2008, 3:00A by Walt

Sandusky City Commissioners voted unanimously on Monday to grant Cedar Fair a 10-year tax abatement for the company's new corporate headquarters. Construction on the building, which will be located next to Cedar Point's Marketing Department, is expected to be completed by November.

The 20,000 square-foot building will house 90 employees in multiple departments.

As part of the agreement, Cedar Fair will provide two annual $5,000 scholarships to Sandusky High School students.

Re: New Cedar Fair building gets 10-year tax abatement

For the life of me I don't know why the City of Sandusky is giving tax abatements to Cedar Point. I guess the upside is that it is only 10 years. But, that City is having some dire economic times...as I understand it. I don't know that they can afford to give away money.

Two $5,000 scholarships a year are nice.

Yeah, I don't get it either. Tax abatements are for attracting new business, not pacifying existing businesses.

And I still think it's completely asinine to build this in the middle of the park.

Re: New Cedar Fair building gets 10-year tax abatement

That was my question. Was Cedar Fair going to pass on doing this if they DIDN'T get incentives?
I know imbecilic reporters created a stir a few years ago by suggesting Cedar Fair would up root its corporate offices and move them to Carrowwinds because that's where the Paramount offices were, but those were no more than failed reporting.

I thought CF was building or renovating a building in Sandusky (off-point) to house the offices and stuff? Did that fall through, or did I just mis-read the story.

Re: New Cedar Fair building gets 10-year tax abatement

Was it confirmed to be imbecilic reporting, or could it have been a trial baloon of sorts to plant the 'seeds' needed to aid in getting this abatement?

Regardless, its crazy. But a pretty big win for CF, I presume.

Re: New Cedar Fair building gets 10-year tax abatement

I think we hashed over it enough that A - Cedar Fair made no such statement. B - the imbecilic reporter pulled the idea out of his/her ass and sent the city scrambling (to the point that the mayor sent them a letter pleading not to move). Just after the story ran, the park issued a statement saying they had no plans to move.

Not to mention, its almost unheard of for Company A to buy Company B and the move all their operations to Company B. Usually, the company doing the buying is safe from relocation.

Headquarters of other amusement park chains are located in some downtown, away from rides, employees, and patrons. Offices of some parks are outside their park area, with the results that some full-time employees never walk in the park and have no idea of what the rides are. I believe that it is a very good thing to locate the offices as close as possible from the park, so the managers know what they manage. Just my opinion.

No, you're illustrating exactly the problem. Kinzel is known for micromanaging Cedar Point, which is not a great use of time when you're running a billion dollar company and most of that billion is coming from elsewhere. Day to day operations at Cedar Point should be of no concern to anyone at the corporate level.

Re: New Cedar Fair building gets 10-year tax abatement

^ - good point.

The General Managers should be walking through their parks, and their offices should be on site.

But DK should not be walking through making operational decisions based on what he sees in those 30 seconds.

But even the GMs should not be over-riding their area managers when they only get a 10 or 15 minute glimpse at an area.

Notice that Steve Jobs is not walking through Magic Kingdom telling the Teacups supervisor that he needs to cut one person from the crew because at that instant there isn't a direct need for a person. Little does he realize that Fantasmic lets out in 10 minutes and a flood of kids are going to load up teacups in a hurry. Something the supervisor and area manager both know very well.

Next to where the new corporate headquarters is going to be, obviously.

Re: New Cedar Fair building gets 10-year tax abatement

I am assuming (perhaps wrongly) that this building is going in the parking lot that surrounds marketing, the foods warehouse and Kinzel's office. Again assuming that they have no intention of moving the Foods warehouse and kitchen areas off-Point then that are would not likely be suitable for much else. Of course, parking is already tight back there so I'm curious to know where those 90 employees are going to park.

Is this going to be on the penninsula or off site? I also have no idea where these buildings are.

I have no clue what to put here !!!!

Re: New Cedar Fair building gets 10-year tax abatement

The people who park there now will have to park next to Blue Streak and the area behind games and Space Spiral. I bet that'll be real convenient in the winter.

Re: New Cedar Fair building gets 10-year tax abatement

I notice cars parked in the courtyard of that building behind Corkscrew. Is that still going to be accessible, or is the new building going to block that off as well?

Thanks again Walt, that clears things up a little bit.

Re: New Cedar Fair building gets 10-year tax abatement

^^I see some trees right beside those buildings. If the building blocks that off, they could take those out and make parking there accessible again.
