Cedar Point seeks workers

Ride park recruits Michigan young adults to fill 5,000 spots

Posted February 26, 2008, 3:18A by Walt

Cedar Point officials are pumping up their recruitment of Michigan college students, with visits to three times as many state campuses this year as they hunt for nearly 5,000 summer workers.

Re: Cedar Point seeks workers

Is this normal? Or is this desperation? Can someone fill me in on if CP has ever been this aggressive in hiring before?

Though on a lighter note, (and no offense to internationals) I am glad to see that they are still hiring a significant number within the states. Though I feel bad for those who show up on Day 1 and get a real look at housing...

Re: Cedar Point seeks workers

I'm a little bit surprised on the numbers. A 25% increase in applications is pretty substantial, and 15,000 total is far more than I would have imagined they processed. Hopefully this is a good sign and will help staffing a little.

Re: Cedar Point seeks workers

It all sounds good until they have overstaffing issues for most of the summer and everyones hours get cut.

Re: Cedar Point seeks workers

I think much of it depends on the Department. While over-staffing seems to occur in areas like Admissions and Merchandise, others seem to nearly always have the opposite problem, including Rides and Park Services.

Re: Cedar Point seeks workers

Wow! Great news. I was afraid CP would be understaffed this year because of the lower wages. I would rather them be overstaffed than understaffed.

Re: Cedar Point seeks workers

2008 has started out very positive. We've got new shows, new kids area, new Challenge Park ride, new restaurant, renovated hotels, and more employees. Let's hope the list goes on.

Re: Cedar Point seeks workers

I think with some of the extreme shortages the park had last year, especially during Halloweekends, it sounds pretty good that they are trying harder to recruit this year.

Both have drawbacks... And neither is adventageous for the employees.

Re: Cedar Point seeks workers

Now they just need all the other Michigan residence to come to the park. Maybe stay at the resorts, get a season pass, go to Soak City, and have some fun in Sandusky. Do that two, three, ten times in 2008 and we're looking at a great season.

And what money are we to do that with? Remember us Michigan residents have this ill conceived notion that its our money.

No offense, because I do know you worked in Admissions, but Rides is a completely different story. Hearing the word 'overstaffed' in Rides is very, very, very uncommon. In fact, I doubt it's even in the Park Operations Dictionary. When staffing ramps up during the peak season and other departments see hours 'cut' and employees get upset, ride hosts see their hours reach a 'normal' and manageable level, and celebrate.haha

They should - on the block before the station.

Re: Cedar Point seeks workers

Well they shouldn't have a problem getting people to work there from Michigan. It's not like anyone in Michigan has a freaking job unless you're plowing snow.

^^haha good one dj. My question is.. if they're seeking more employees, will they need to find more room in the dorms? I've never worked there so I don't know if the dorms fill to capacity or what.

Re: Cedar Point seeks workers

Up 25%? I'll believe it when I see it. If it's true, great. But every year I hear how dismal the actual arrival rates are. A rather deplorable percentage of those hired either never process in, or don't last long.

More workers would be great, but I honestly didn't think they could come up with that many more. Again, if they did, great. But another solution (and I wonder if this is what happened here) is that they removed the length-of-agreement requirement. For example, if they are just signing extra people up for early or late season, that would make a huge difference.

Re: Cedar Point seeks workers

Speaking from some experience, it makes no difference how many applicants there are. What is imporant is how many qualified/acceptable applicants there are.

Furthermore, if 25% (or some other number) ONLY want to work on rides, and wouldn't accept a different position in the park, then those numbers aren't much help either.

Actually Michigan based employees are a natural fit. They're used to traveling at 90 mph. At the Point they can even do it legally.

If they come to Muskegon Community College I might apply, if I can be the DJ in the MF line, and play uplifting electronic music that makes people want to love one another.
