Area schools to start after Labor Day in bid to help Cedar Point

Three Sandusky area school districts adopt 2008-09 school year calendars with classes starting after Labor Day.

Posted January 29, 2008, 5:37A by Walt

Sandusky and Castalia Margaretta school boards yesterday voted to adopt 2008-09 school year calendars with school starting after Labor Day. They join Sandusky Perkins Local Schools, whose board on Jan. 16 approved a school year calendar with classes resuming Sept. 2, the day after Labor Day.

Is this just a case of robbing Peter to pay Paul? So they now hurt at the beginning of the season. I guess the number of visitors is lower in June than in late August though.

I'm a proponent for starting after Labor Day just because that is the way it should be. Not because commercial entities want it that way.

Re: Area schools to start after Labor Day in bid to help Cedar Point

I am curious to see what would happen if the entire state makes this move. Yes, the last week of August gets ugly but in my opinion it is already ugly now that the entire state of Michigan decides to show up then. What does it do to the beginning of the year with field trips? A few years back the first week of May used to be awesome because the field trips had not started yet. Last year when the park opened a week later we lost that great week because the field trips started immediately. If schools start later in the year and then end later will we get our great week back?

^I guess that all depends on which way you look at it. The "no lines" perspective or "more money" perspective.

Lets not forget that the whole world is pissed about GLP being closed and no one is going to visit the park anyway. So this is pretty much a moot point.

Re: Area schools to start after Labor Day in bid to help Cedar Point

It's true! Remember how NO ONE went to the park for Halloweekends? You know, that took place after the announcement was made...while it was fresh in everyone's mind.

Yep. Park was empty the whole time. Terrible attendance.

Clearly, if any people were in the park (which they weren't!!), it was just to show off their "Save Geauga Lake" t-shirts.

Re: Area schools to start after Labor Day in bid to help Cedar Point

Am I the only one that thought the title of the article sounded a little odd? I realize the schools are doing this to help the tourism/economy of the area, and CP is a big part of that, but saying they are doing it "to help Cedar Point" is kinda funny to me.

Maybe I'm being overly picky, but personally I would have worded it a little differently.

I do have to eat, but I don't have to eat inside the park...who's up for a parking lot barbeque?

I thought the headline was odd also. But, an after Labor Day start to the school year is how it should be all over. That's how it was when I went to school, and it makes sense because Labor Day is the symbolic end of summer to most people.

When my Kids started high-school, because of band,
football, soccer and what not... Labor Day wasn't
the end of summer, the beginning of August was. .
That's when Band Camp Started, Football Tryouts start,
and whatever other school function started... My
Kids spent all of August in School, not for studying,
That's Probably one reason they Start August 15th.

Why does every body say that wrong! The schools name is just Margaretta, not Castalia Margaretta. I hate it when they mess up our school name.

Because no one knows where the hell it is otherwise. It's common practice everywhere, including with the OHSAA when naming a school in a tournament.

I went to De La Salle Collegiate High School. Never saw that in the paper though, it was always listed in sports scores as Warren De La Salle.

Just like Birmingham Brother Rice or Harper Woods Notre Dame.

Of course, Detroit Country Day is in Bloomfield Hills.

Re: Area schools to start after Labor Day in bid to help Cedar Point

Yes they worded it wrong.

I believe that Sandusky is open to anything that will keep the economy going as long as possible (aka keep the big summer crowds as long as possible)

Without anyone around to service, the service industry declines (duh).
