When I worked at the Breakers I had dreams of turning the Rotunda into some kind of guest rooms...or even a suite of some type. There are a few drawbacks.
One is the ugly fire escape outside the building. The second is the lack of an elevator. (It is five floors up to the top.) The third is the small rooms. But, there are lots of possibilities if they got creative and I think the room(s) could rival the large suites they have in the Tower or Breakers East. Maybe they could get really creative and install a "private" elevator.
Shhhh...don't tell anyone. Back in the day the housekeepers, at the end of the season, would pile up all the linens on the Rotunda floor until it was at least a floor to a floor and a half deep. Then, the more daring (read: stupid) ones would climb up to the fifth floor and then jump down into the mountain of linen. Another popular sport was linen chute diving. It is self explanatory.
